Text from Patrick, 11:30pm 8/14/06

I'm in Barnaul and we just finished some basic repairs. Plan is to pick up the pace and speed to ub! Itching to get home. [Jen did some research and it looks like other teams taking this route took around four days to arrive in UB from Barnaul.]

We like the speed to UB part. Other teams have noted that the Russian cops have been enforcing speed limit, so push hard but at a safe speed. Waiting anxiously for the announcement that you are in UB.

From the data Google Earth is giving me, it looks like the fastest way from Barnaul to Ulan Ude is to Novosibirsk to Krasnoyarsk to Irkutsk. Not necessarily the shortest, mind you, just the most stable and populated.
